Most people like puchs. I like my magnum, but thats about it. After a lot of them, I was bored. So I traded my nice swinger (originally with a za50 and 5 stars, now with flakes and an e50) for a sweet sachs g3. I used to have a general with a 505 that I really liked, so I figured I ought to get a sachs because they are pretty bad ass.
So I traded for this pretty G3 with a 505-1D. It runs pretty well and is in pretty good shape. The coaster brake is weird, but overall I’m pretty excited. Maybe one day I’ll get it a 2 or 3 speed motor. Now all my mopeds are either all or have some red. Pretty sweet!

I’ve got a lot on the plate for this week.

I got my magnum running yesterday. The petcock started leaking just before the ride today, so I had to make a an o-ring out of fuel line on the spot. Its running super solid, I always forget how this moped is the best moped ever.

cleaning and sealing the ltd tank this week, finally.

this is the ugliest pipe ever. Originally a tomos estoril, its survived a lot. The pipe was derestricted, the silencer has fallen off numerous times, the header has snapped a few times, etc. Somehow it still works fine, and take my brother’s tomos to crazy speeds.

broken polini cup derbi motor.

most fun bike ever. Currently disabled.

need a stock cylinder or some old tires?

getting vespino ready to ship out to kentucky. fits in the box, just gotta pack it properly now.

after several months down, my magnum is back, alive and doing very well. The 2 speed feels great, new rear wheel bearings are smooth, and it hasn’t missed a beat. I am trying a few cdi boxes out, and working on getting all the power I can. Currently running with my n8p which really hits hard in 1st, but lulls a bit in 2nd before hitting again around 45-50, then pulls decently well. 60+ no problem. My old CDI box had more pull though up top, so some switching is in order. LTD tank is awaiting POR15, so my brothers silver tank will do for now. I forgot how fun this bike is.

This is on as well. I wanna go fast! Race tech developments are going well.

So back in LA I noticed the rear wheel of my magnum had a little bit of play in it. I proceeded to blast a lot of people and hit personal land speed records. The other day as I rolled the limited on the stand I noticed the rear wheel now had about an inch of play (at the tire) and I dunno, I guess thats bad. So I pull the wheel apart and find some nice bearings. One is all crusty, the other looks almost decent, but 1 or 2 balls are dislodged from the cage and they move around way too much. I don’t want that blowing up at 55, so new bearings are in route.
The motor is getting closer, and now I have a lot of CDI boxes to try. I’ve got the OG hero box that I used for a few months that ripped, but benji thinks these others may in fact be a little better, so we’ll see. I’ve got these 3 to test and the other box is currently living on derbi if I need it.
I got a place to live, so now its time to finish the mopeds. I’m going to bring derbi (i think i decided on variant sport frame over ds50), and I need to finish the white magnum and sell it, just a few cosmetic touches there, and I want to get the limited running just as well as it did before, and I’d like to station that in the city for moped rides, and I need to get my racer tidied up for the september (maybe july???) races. So yea, I’ve got a lot to do. All must rip. Oh yea, fixed my friend’s derbi, turned out a ground was disconnected. Super nOOb

So about a week ago I had a wanted ad up on craigslist. This guys, who happens to be just around the corner emailed me saying he had a nice magnum II thats been apart under his workbench for the past 10+ years. Fast forward to today, my brother and I drive down the street, and he unveils a really nice magnum. Its silver with spokes and pooper forks, za50, perfect seat, mediocre paint, and a perfectly clean tank. This is going to be my brother’s moped, so he offers the dude $150, and he says no, he’ll take $100! He goes inside and pulls a stack of paper work, including the original receipt, and the original registration. It sold for $799 back in ’81, and came from a shop in Mountain View (from which a handful of my previous mopeds have originated). He said he was going to take it to the dump this week, and was super stoked for us to buy it off him.
So there you have it, magnums still exist in yards, garages and other misc. spots even in some of the most “plucked” moped areas. They are still out there hiding, waiting to be rescued.
Tentative plans call for a near replication of my setup. Polini za50, phbg, circuit, etc. Its a solid setup that does 55 and gets there quick, a real winner. Lucky for him I have tons of extra parts. Updates to come as the bike is reassembled and upgraded.

So I threw my limited tank on thinking it was clean, but its not. Shit clogged my carb really bad and I don’t have the time before LA to properly clean and coat the tank, so it will be a one of a kind-of limited. It running really well, my same polini setup on a za50. 20t front sprocket coming soon for crazy speeds. Maybe you will be passed by this ugly thing at LA. When you see the brightest headlight ever, its this bike. I’m pretty excited cause all my mopeds are running well, and I’m done for rally action so I can just study for finals this week. You are probably jealous.
Everything is painted/ready except the mags. Still searching for paint, hopefully something will be in my possession thursday. I also need some striping. I’ve got everything else except a throttle (I’ve got one to use for the time being) and cable. I need to switch everything over from the brown bike, and re-assemble the za50 and the forks, but its basically all there, should be running this weekend minus the finished wheels. I’m pretty excited, I’ve been waiting a long while to have the limited done.

I got my tank back from rafter at the 77 raffle part, so that and the fork ears were done in white. Rafter did a great job on it all, and I’m excited to get that bike back together. I still need to rebuild the motor (airsal, etc) and paint the 5 stars, maybe that will get done soon.
First though is getting the Limited up and running. The 2 speed suffered some exploded clutches the other night, so I need to pop in a new 1st speed and it should be fine. I got the forks painted and now all thats left is the wheels and I need a throttle. I just scored a set of my favorite tires, of course the michelin m29s, 2.75×17. Brand new and cheap too! Those will get mounted up once everything is together. My goal is to have most of it done by the end of next weekend, and hopefully running.
Derbi is up and running on the oko, but its still too rich and I need to still get that timing dialed in. We’ll see how much gets done this week with a chem midterm. We might get some track time on friday if everything goes to plan. Chappy will probably be on the chop block this week, I guess we’ll see what kind of interest it generates. I guess polini sold their stock chappy for 1k, so I’m hoping for more. Still need to figure out how we are getting to LA.

I still haven’t tuned my shit (wind, rain and other obligations), but I decided to get a 24 oko for derbi. I got a bigger intake from benji (24.3mm inner diameter), and the oko and all the jets and stuff. Everything fit right up except the throttle cable, so now I need a new one, and am waiting on that. After riding 3 race bikes (mine, creature jimmy’s and tom’s), I feel like I’m doing well. My bike performed similarly to Jimmy’s decked out peugeot, but both pale in comparison to tom’s derbi. I think the bigger carb and actually tuning the carb and ignition should get mine to pull as hard as his. Front wheel lift is unavoidable if you dump the throttle through turns! Oh yea, new TJT belt seems to have removed any/all variator lag, so now it won’t be scary to ride anymore. I should have it running tuesday or so, basically as soon as the new cable comes. Race practice was cancelled today due to rain. We are hoping to get some track time this week.
Some new parts for the flat reed motor came as well, so I’m getting excited. Benji is the parts master. I sent him a wishlist, and the next day, seemingly reading my mind, what I wanted arrived in treatland. I want a derbi rear wheel for herbi because the 5 star hub may cause some issues with sprocket alignment and tabs have to be added to the swingarm. I’ll update if I get anymore parts or make any progress.
Also, I got my magnum back up and running. I needed a moped running last night, so I’m using my brown frame, ups tank and other goodies, 2 speed polini and more. Its pretty quick now, very fun!
