mopeds

roundup

ok, first midterm done, so I’ve got some time. So yes, as stated the polini cup was awesome. I should have studied all weekend, but instead I went to atwater and tried to race.

Cuperteens broken race team: the story of the year. (Check out my rad c5 in the background. Thanks Colby!)

It was a tough morning. I got my bike all together last week and was basically hoping it would survive the races. I went out in qualifying and my bike was a turd. It wouldn’t rev through the pipe on the straight, so I was just cruising. I tried to make a few adjustments before twist and go qualifying, but it just got worse, with my bike even slower on the straight and the variator binding and making for horrid power. So after re-timing the bike, down jetting, replacing the rear pulley, switched back to a stock spring, changing the variator weights, and re-adjusting tire pressure it was time for the moped race.

I didn’t ride very well, I think I got 6th in the first moped race. I somehow managed to get out in front of everyone but tommy and jeff, but poor lines through the twisties quickly yielded lost spots to first jimmy, then elliot (on the e5, so sick!), then ultimately terry dean when I went super wide on the hairpin. I then proceded to suck even more, almost falling at least twice (2 wheel drifts!), the actually having a decent rematch vs. Latebird Nik. Unfortunately he fell on the last lap but was ok. I managed to get then 3rd or 4th in twist and go (tommy broke), but my bike was super janky.

I then proceeded to replace my shocks (tom lent everything to me, a real trooper after his crank twisted up saturday), but missed the dash for cash. I had WestCoast Ben (or Ben Jammin) ride his sick derbi, but it was a bit out of tune. Terry Dean ripped it up out there and won like $120. So awesome!

I got back out there for moped 2, but on after the 1st lap I had some crazy vibrations and turns out my crank twisted just like tom’s. Bummer! I guess this was the 10th crank i’ve destroyed, dunno. So someone had to get out there for twist and go, and luckily the mosquito bus brought mr. travis and his rad hobbit, so he put on the boots and ripped it up out there, getting 4th in the most entertaining race ever (with tommy on the jog).

So yea, racing was awesome. Jeff managed to hang on to the win in mopeds, with elliot on the e5 just narrowly behind (with another lap or 2, who knows!). He took home the metro rider for 1st overall on the season. Jimmy was second and got a rad helmet, which he earned after nearly knocking himself out in the dash for cash, and tommy rounded up the podium in 3rd.

The puch polini racing was also epic. The first race had Round, Jimmy and Alan all neck and neck right up to the last lap. Alan managed to pass jimmy on the last turn of the last lap and took it home. The 2nd race was slightly less intense because alan fell, but still awesome with jimmy and round battling hard. I’m super excited about this class next season.

Somehow I managed to get 3rd overall in twist and go for the season, so I won a big box full of oil and cleaners, some posters, and a sweet key chain! Tommy got 2nd and got some rad racing slicks for his pitbike! (he has one, right?) Mr. Scooter Rumple got 1st. We will get him next year.

Ok, so thats it. The Polini Cup was rad. Polini USA did an amazing job all year making this happen. Big thanks to them, 1977Mopeds, and everyone else who made racing this year a reality. Atwater has been great, and I’m super stoked about next season. More parties (that bus better be back down), more racing, and more fun overall. I’ll post some pictures of my new builds as they happen over the winter.

I still haven’t tuned my shit (wind, rain and other obligations), but I decided to get a 24 oko for derbi. I got a bigger intake from benji (24.3mm inner diameter), and the oko and all the jets and stuff. Everything fit right up except the throttle cable, so now I need a new one, and am waiting on that. After riding 3 race bikes (mine, creature jimmy’s and tom’s), I feel like I’m doing well. My bike performed similarly to Jimmy’s decked out peugeot, but both pale in comparison to tom’s derbi. I think the bigger carb and actually tuning the carb and ignition should get mine to pull as hard as his. Front wheel lift is unavoidable if you dump the throttle through turns! Oh yea, new TJT belt seems to have removed any/all variator lag, so now it won’t be scary to ride anymore. I should have it running tuesday or so, basically as soon as the new cable comes. Race practice was cancelled today due to rain. We are hoping to get some track time this week.

Some new parts for the flat reed motor came as well, so I’m getting excited. Benji is the parts master. I sent him a wishlist, and the next day, seemingly reading my mind, what I wanted arrived in treatland. I want a derbi rear wheel for herbi because the 5 star hub may cause some issues with sprocket alignment and tabs have to be added to the swingarm. I’ll update if I get anymore parts or make any progress.

Also, I got my magnum back up and running. I needed a moped running last night, so I’m using my brown frame, ups tank and other goodies, 2 speed polini and more. Its pretty quick now, very fun!

COBRA!

So after waiting like 2 or 3 months, this cobra is finally mine, in my hands and totally awesome. Now I must first admit, I hate cobra’s. They are weird, bulbous, offensive mopeds with horrible design cues. They threw a huge tank on a pinto frame and added a butt ugly seat on the already stock pinto rack. They simply are not attractive. Now all that said, I’m still super stoked. I got what I thought was a good deal for the condition, so again, I’m super excited.

There is about 10 pounds of sawdust covering this thing, but underneath it all is one of the nicest, well preserved original mopeds I’ve seen (not including First Kick Dave’s amazing pink champagne newport). The tank is flawless, perfect paint, like 3 small scratches (it might be 4), awesome decals, a perfect seat, original tool-kit, shiny chrome wheels, bars, racks, and only 470 miles. When we drained the transmission fluid up in Arnold, it came out looking brand new, even though it hasn’t been ridden in years.

The motor has great compression, solid spark, and a clean 14mm bing. Unfortunately, there is some residual ancient gas stinking up the tank. I need to flush it out, then this thing is going to fire up like its brand new. I’m really excited (if you couldn’t tell). I also need to finish cleaning the rims, and dust off the front then just wax it up because I have to, its that nice. More amazing photos will come once its running perfectly later this week. Oh yea, its got an original california blue and yellow plate and registration. Sick!

Also, the other new love of my moped life, a paz’d out za50. It now has my ported polini and proma circuit making for awesome around town riding. Up at last week’s creature ride I was quickest off the line and up to about 30, when Lee overtook me on his racer poopgeout. Sure it only goes 45ish, but its so fun, going to like 25-30 before shifting, shifting on command, downshifting perfectly and everything. so fun!

So yea, you can probably count the 3 magnums in the shed now. The black beauty (4 petal polini, estoril?, powdercoated tank, nos nostalgia rims, etc), the new one from brando, and the other one up on the shelf (soon to be my za50 ltd). I’m going to be selling 2 of them pretty soon, and just keeping the ltd. I’m not sure what will happen with the cobra, but right now I’m going to enjoy my new moped.

Oh yea, I won a flat reed motor for derbi! This has been an exciting week. I’m going to be putting that on my sle frame, I know, mods must be done, then the piston port gilarblowme on the hobbit frame. 2 racers. I need to get rid of some mopeds.
