I’ve been missing for a bit, but am still around. The frevolution has been kicking it, and I finally pulled the custom built pipe from my derbi race bike off so it doesn’t get destroyed by the streets (and fog) of SF. I got one of those fasmem pipes from treats and had to add a little bracket and trim my transmission cover a tad to get the fit. I had a little electrical issue (read: custom construction = melted headlight) and got a replacement that was creating some gremlins. Some crafty work and now all systems are a go. It doesn’t run nearly as well as it did with the simoni pipe, but a little tuning ought to help out. It does fit on nicely though.

Next up might be a throwback: decking out my clean newport with a gila/phbg ripper setup and mobbing that around town. The details are unclear, but I have a few kits sitting and I want something a little different for the city. I love the start 3 derbi motor but I don’t want to go all crazy with it and unfortunately am limited on gearing by preserving the puch swingarm/wheels. So I’m thinking simple e50 build on a nice base. Should be simple and fun to ride around. With some luck I’ll have a post or two about it.

Oh yeah, got another toy, but it still needs a little work. More on that later.

Derbi SL build pt2

Got the beast running today. We had some little troubles with a bad head gasket then the wrong base spacing, but we got it all dialed in and it fired right up. Runs like a beast! Pretty quick, especially for a 12.12 sha. I can’t wait to get something bigger on there. We have some minor things to do still, but basically its all there. Score!

Sean got his new build fired up and its looking good. Obviously need some more little things, but hey, almost there and it sounds great.

nick made tri-tip ($2 a pound vs. $4 for ground beef), and we made another pie. The berries were a bit more ripe, and I made more crust so I wouldn’t have to crappily weave it. Jon Kho added more sugar and we rounded it off with some vanilla ice cream. 10000x better than the last one.

Tony liked it a lot so he liked everyone’s plate cream as well as the tin.

Next I decided I wanted to build a new bike (never mind all my broken bikes and far-off projects). It’s Freespirit mixed with the beautiful c5/laguna tank. The freespirit seat pan fits the lines of the tank beautifully, so time to get custom. Lower the seat, put on a bar, build holders and weld it all up. Mockup with wood is best.

I didn’t know what size shocks were in stock, so each potential length was marked. 370s in stock, so less custom work required.

Sean did a good job welding it. Not 100% pro-status, but certainly better than I could do. Its not going anywhere. Some more mods in store, as well as a motor build, pipe mod, fork swap, wheels fixing and probably other stuff I’m forgetting right now. It’ll be done by the end of the weekend.

Motor is gonna be a bit boring. 65 hero kit, 19 phbg, selettra, 75cc derbi zen all on my kickstart e50. I want to ktm clutch it eventually and put a better cylinder on. It should be a torque monster.

the derbi that can

so we all like riding our mopeds about, but only one of us really depends on one for day to day transportation (meaning this is how he gets around, without it its really tough). Mike rides his derbi everywhere. School, work, work, to the library, and to our houses to hang out. He also has a smiley, but the clutch starting plate is busted so that doesn’t work at the moment.

When the derbi started acting up, then finally stopped working, he had to bike everywhere. He was biking 15-20 miles a day, late at night, in the rain, no lights and a busted rear wheel. Fortunately matt figured out the seal was blown, so he replaced it and now mike can get around a bit easier again. Now he just needs a spare smiley motor.

For those curious how to make your piston port derbi pretty badass for under $150, here is how:
Get a tomos homeot 4p pipe
Get a 15 or 16 sha body
Install both, and remove the restrictor and one of weights from the variator

Now enjoy the boost, from 25-28 to a flat out 35, and 40+ down hills, and mean acceleration to boot! So fun, so easy. This setup is why I love derbis.

Kind-of Limited

So I threw my limited tank on thinking it was clean, but its not. Shit clogged my carb really bad and I don’t have the time before LA to properly clean and coat the tank, so it will be a one of a kind-of limited. It running really well, my same polini setup on a za50. 20t front sprocket coming soon for crazy speeds. Maybe you will be passed by this ugly thing at LA. When you see the brightest headlight ever, its this bike. I’m pretty excited cause all my mopeds are running well, and I’m done for rally action so I can just study for finals this week. You are probably jealous.

Almost done!

So today was a fun-filled reassembly day. I’m almost done. Now that its almost done, I’m glad I didn’t paint/powdercoat it. It would be too nice if I did and I like the red/gold.

I found the intake. The carb is at an angle, but it’ll be fine to run.

I thought I lost some stuff but I eventually found everything. All I need to do now is pick a pipe (I’m leaning metra cause the zen is super top end. Also its going to be easier to get pedal clearance.) and finish the ignition and timing. I should probably get a tail light too.

So I got my gilardoni, pipe and head today. The gilardoni was soft seized, but the damage was very minimal. There are a few scores in the piston, but the cylinder is fine and its got new rings. I’m sure it will do great, especially for an unbeatable price. I got the stock reeds with it and an intake to run a phbg on a e50, so I’m going to have to fab up an intake. I’ll get some pics of that, and you will see how tight (and perfectly) the gila fits in my variant frame.

The head is a metrakit 47mm decom head designed for the flat reed cylinders, ¬†and its basically identical to the stock head except well its bigger. I’m going to have to figure out how to make the decomp work as there is no hole in the cylinder from the head sealing point to the exhaust port. I saw lee make the hole for a peugeot cylinder, but I could just as easily just cut out a small channel out of the decomp channel to open air. Regardless, it will make the bike way easier to start and I won’t have to cut any fins.

The pipe is a 75cc zen which is hydroformed. The header has a HUGE inner diameter and the chamber is nearly the size of a doppler. It looks pretty but I’m going to have to cut it and slightly re-angle it so its not dragging too low. I’m also going to have to add a bracket to support it because the one on there aligns with the swingarm and thats not going to work.

I also ran into rafter today at 77, and I think I’m going to have the frame powdercoated. I’m thinking green and black.
