So there has been a fair amount of talk about getting some racing going again down in southern california as well as continuing the series up in the pacific northwest. In turn, I was getting prepared to build a cool 50cc french bike. Matt got me all excited and has started his, but last week I got an email from Tony regarding his radical derbi (1 of 2) that he built with Jimmy and motomatic. Of course I had to pounce, he offered a deal no one can refuse.

Sean and I went up to Sacramento yesterday (forgot my camera, dur!) to get our goodies and I must say I’m super excited. I wish the racing were a bit closer, but with a pretty mellow semester this spring and graduation beyond, its time to race!

I’ll post pictures as we get everything together. The derbi is insane. I can’t even begin to describe how much was done to it. Here is pistol pete riding it in April

So the weather is just about perfect right now. Sunny with highs in the mid-70s, and everything blooming and green. No dead grass or fires yet. Matt and I decided to hit up the archery range for a few hours and hit some targets. We aren’t that good, but whatever, its still fun

The hanging targets are the most fun.

I pretty much got the magnum done. Its not quite tuned yet, but the seat is one, tank secure, HPI on and kind-of timed, and mikuni and intake done.

Everything went pretty well. I just used my derbi intake, but drilled new holes so if came off to the side for the mikuni. I think this was the first time all my holes lined up the first time. Seat brackets took a few, but the freespirit seats are actually really close to mounting up on magnums. I bent the rear bolts out just a tad and built quick brackets for the front. The derbi tank is a tad wider than a magnum tank, so I built up the rubber mounts so it didn’t move around. I know the lines aren’t perfect, but I’d hate to rip up my perfect seat or dent/scrape my ltd tank, so it will have to do. The riding position is actually quite nice. The red bike theme continues

While working Bro and Matt went up the hill, Matt to ride his bike down (drivetrain missing), and Bro to longboard. This hill is awesome when everything works right, but speed wobbles are not good. I lost my brake once coming down and crashed into the bushes. This time Bro’s hand and elbow took the brunt of it.

Putting the HPI together was quick and easy, just the first time I didn’t tighten the nut all the way down so the flywheel came loose on the first test run. I’ve got it set just about 2mm BTDC and it seems pretty powerful. I’m geared 18×36 and it gets up to speed a bit quicker than it did with treats CDI and the phbg. Top speed somewhere close or at 60. With some tuning and shorter gearing it should be pretty good for the track. I really prefer top tanks over step-throughs when it comes to riding as its so nice to have something to hold onto with your legs. So while this thing will be nowhere near a contender, it should be a lot of fun.

Finished the night off with some tri-tip, guacamole and jalapenos. A busy, but very fun day. This kind of day makes me very excited for summer.

Whistler in the morning. I’m bringing the mini-camera so I’ll take so pictures and update (sorry for the crappy pictures, this camera sucks in low light).

so while all the other teams seem to be doing all this crazy stuff, we’ve been keeping it pretty low key. I’m just going to accept derbi how it is. I know I could get a lot more out of it with a little porting, but I want to make sure it survives the weekend before I tear into it further. I also would like to mod the clutch more, but can’t afford another broken shoe, so that will also wait. The cdi and zen pipe paired with the disks already make it a fair amount faster than its last appearance in may (in which it earned the 3rd fastest lap time), so maybe it will be alright.

MagnumX is also going to be coming along and has received its own upgrades. 64cc of piston port magic make for some amazing torque. The pipe we made totally limits its top end, but its loud, and pulls pretty well throughout. I’ll probably ride it in at least one practice just for fun.

My brother is upgrading his tomos as I type, polini, 4 petal, etc. Again, won’t be the fastest bike, but it should rip pretty hard.

Justin (blasto) is riding the polini maxi which has a polini kit on it. I think its slow, and his pipe is going to scrape, but it has some amazing throttle response. Tom (broke dan’s arms) I think is just going to be riding speed racer again, but this time better tuned and a tad faster. He has some other builds in the works, but he’s all hush hush and I don’t know whats happening with them. Matt should just be riding his garelli/derbi monster. HPI, zen pipe, 75cc metrakit and a lomat 4 petal with a 24 mikuni makes a super blaster. My bike has more low end, but his mid-range/top end is insane. True blaster steez. No kinked fuel lines this time.

So thats it, no super hobbit/derbi/puch builds or whatever, although I kinda wish we were. I think Tommy and Jimmy should be ripping, but i know choke is working on some stuff too, so we’ll see. Everyone is upgrading and adapting very quickly. I do have leathers and plan to race as long as I’m healthy. I couldn’t walk yesterday, but spent most the day wrenching today, so I should be fine by friday. Either way, I’m super excited for the weekend. A long lost cuperteen returns!

thanks again rafter for doing the tank and ears. I know it wasn’t fun, but you did a great job. thanks to mr. harry hoppe for all the LTD stuff. I’m having a bitch of a time finding paint even close to matching the yellowed beige for the rims. Moped disaster continues.

I got my tank back from rafter at the 77 raffle part, so that and the fork ears were done in white. Rafter did a great job on it all, and I’m excited to get that bike back together. I still need to rebuild the motor (airsal, etc) and paint the 5 stars, maybe that will get done soon.

First though is getting the Limited up and running. The 2 speed suffered some exploded clutches the other night, so I need to pop in a new 1st speed and it should be fine. I got the forks painted and now all thats left is the wheels and I need a throttle. I just scored a set of my favorite tires, of course the michelin m29s, 2.75×17. Brand new and cheap too! Those will get mounted up once everything is together. My goal is to have most of it done by the end of next weekend, and hopefully running.

Derbi is up and running on the oko, but its still too rich and I need to still get that timing dialed in. We’ll see how much gets done this week with a chem midterm. We might get some track time on friday if everything goes to plan. Chappy will probably be on the chop block this week, I guess we’ll see what kind of interest it generates. I guess polini sold their stock chappy for 1k, so I’m hoping for more. Still need to figure out how we are getting to LA.

Derbi-Herbi Updates

Update day.

So the black magnum has been sold and was delivered yesterday. I also dropped off my tank and fork ears for my next magnum up at Motomatic in sacramento. I’m getting them done in white, the frame is already a brownish gray, and the wheels are going to be black. I’m then going to do some orange stripes on the mags and get some black and orange decals to pull it all together. The airsal and other goodies seen below on the brown magnum will be on it.

I worked all day on derbi today. I had to pull the cases apart to grind away some nubs that the piston was hitting at the bottom of the crank’s rotation. So yea, I got to see all the inards, and its really pretty simple. There are a few gears and a chain, but nothing really exciting. I got the cases back together and the gilardoni bolted up with the metra decomp-head. I got a stock gila intake yesterday (thanks rafter and nate), but I lost it somewhere in my car or something. If I can’t find it I’ll weld something up.

I also bolted on the tjt I got from benji yesterday. Tom was telling me he had all sorts of problems but mine slipped right on and it seems fine. I greased up the rollers as well. I got the TJT pulley spring on, and after hearing a lot about issues with the hobbit version, the tjt is clearly stronger than stock, but not by a whole lot. It should work fine.

Tomorrow I’m going to finish up the motor (electronics which are a disaster) and switch my m29s over to the derbi mags and hopefully get the rest of the bike together and ready to run. I also need to cut and reweld my zen pipe, but that should be pretty easy. This bad boy should be running by next weekend if all goes to plan.

I also got some grande forks (thanks ZachLee!) and they fit perfectly on the hobbit. I also got a rear hub for my 16″ puch five star so thats going to be on the back. I’m going to have to weld up a tab for the break plate and hopefully the gearing will work out alright. I feel like its going to be a bit short, but we’ll see eventually. I need some tires but I’m not sure yet. This bike is going to be butt-ugly with all the different parts to it, but it should be decently fast and hopefully nimble. I was originally worried that the wheelbase was going to be too stretched for the frame, but now I’m worried its going to be short. Herbi is going to be on the back burner while the gilarderbi gets going and tuned, but I’ll be getting everything on herbi ready as I go along.
