mopeds

roundup

ok, first midterm done, so I’ve got some time. So yes, as stated the polini cup was awesome. I should have studied all weekend, but instead I went to atwater and tried to race.

Cuperteens broken race team: the story of the year. (Check out my rad c5 in the background. Thanks Colby!)

It was a tough morning. I got my bike all together last week and was basically hoping it would survive the races. I went out in qualifying and my bike was a turd. It wouldn’t rev through the pipe on the straight, so I was just cruising. I tried to make a few adjustments before twist and go qualifying, but it just got worse, with my bike even slower on the straight and the variator binding and making for horrid power. So after re-timing the bike, down jetting, replacing the rear pulley, switched back to a stock spring, changing the variator weights, and re-adjusting tire pressure it was time for the moped race.

I didn’t ride very well, I think I got 6th in the first moped race. I somehow managed to get out in front of everyone but tommy and jeff, but poor lines through the twisties quickly yielded lost spots to first jimmy, then elliot (on the e5, so sick!), then ultimately terry dean when I went super wide on the hairpin. I then proceded to suck even more, almost falling at least twice (2 wheel drifts!), the actually having a decent rematch vs. Latebird Nik. Unfortunately he fell on the last lap but was ok. I managed to get then 3rd or 4th in twist and go (tommy broke), but my bike was super janky.

I then proceeded to replace my shocks (tom lent everything to me, a real trooper after his crank twisted up saturday), but missed the dash for cash. I had WestCoast Ben (or Ben Jammin) ride his sick derbi, but it was a bit out of tune. Terry Dean ripped it up out there and won like $120. So awesome!

I got back out there for moped 2, but on after the 1st lap I had some crazy vibrations and turns out my crank twisted just like tom’s. Bummer! I guess this was the 10th crank i’ve destroyed, dunno. So someone had to get out there for twist and go, and luckily the mosquito bus brought mr. travis and his rad hobbit, so he put on the boots and ripped it up out there, getting 4th in the most entertaining race ever (with tommy on the jog).

So yea, racing was awesome. Jeff managed to hang on to the win in mopeds, with elliot on the e5 just narrowly behind (with another lap or 2, who knows!). He took home the metro rider for 1st overall on the season. Jimmy was second and got a rad helmet, which he earned after nearly knocking himself out in the dash for cash, and tommy rounded up the podium in 3rd.

The puch polini racing was also epic. The first race had Round, Jimmy and Alan all neck and neck right up to the last lap. Alan managed to pass jimmy on the last turn of the last lap and took it home. The 2nd race was slightly less intense because alan fell, but still awesome with jimmy and round battling hard. I’m super excited about this class next season.

Somehow I managed to get 3rd overall in twist and go for the season, so I won a big box full of oil and cleaners, some posters, and a sweet key chain! Tommy got 2nd and got some rad racing slicks for his pitbike! (he has one, right?) Mr. Scooter Rumple got 1st. We will get him next year.

Ok, so thats it. The Polini Cup was rad. Polini USA did an amazing job all year making this happen. Big thanks to them, 1977Mopeds, and everyone else who made racing this year a reality. Atwater has been great, and I’m super stoked about next season. More parties (that bus better be back down), more racing, and more fun overall. I’ll post some pictures of my new builds as they happen over the winter.

Race Weekend 3

finally a weekend on the track. Saturday was meh. I blew up the gilarderbi yet again, but it will be fine with another new piston. Stupiid jetting made it through 2 practices, but it died number 3. I was all over the place in practice and just couldn’t get a good line going. My bike felt wonderful but I didn’t. I took some practices with magnumX in the pit bike group and actually passed one kid. Super sweet!

Sunday I planned on swapping with my brother on his tomos, but Tom went down hard in qualifying and may have suffered a weak concussion. He’s alright, and his bike ok except a busted fender and sadly a broken spoke on his rear 5 star mag. He gave me permission to ride the bike, so I swapped on my rear wheel and went out in both moped and twist and go.

1st moped heat I stalled off the line and was doing really well and ended up 7th. I was doing about a 44, or just under 43. Twist and go was basically just more track time, so I continued to get comfortable. By other people’s issues, I got 2nd. The 2nd moped race was amazing, fighting past craig on elliot’s moby, then fending off nik of choke on his metra80 tomos. I ended up with a 42.49 lap time, which to my amazement was a hair faster than tommy on his awesome hobbit. The final twist and go was basically just more track time, with jeff, tommy and a fast scooter battling it out. I was pushing as hard as I could and stayed as close as I could and Mr. Scooter dropped it the 2nd to last turn of the last lap, and I pulled past him, earning 3rd place and I guess a podium spot! I dropped another 100th with my best time of the weekend 42.48, faster than all others in the previous 2 events (april and may), so I guess I did pretty well.

Big ups to tom for letting me blast. I had so much fun, man. The racing plus the offroading/jumps on magnumX saturday evening made for an awesome weekend. No more polini cup ’till september, so I need to get some track time in until then.

cuperteens race team that stinks at racing because we are newb tuners and kinda crummy riders

Ok, so polini cup #2 is over, and I’m here to report on the cuperteens.

So yet again, we suck. Matt got his derbi up and running well during the week all to be destroyed 1st practice on saturday. He was going fast, jetting looked good, but upon really opening it up on the front straight, it super seized. It was a 4 corner seize flaking the nikisil on all 4 points. Cylinder death. On sunday he saw that his fuel line was kinked, meaning the float bowl didn’t fill fast enough, so when that mikuni was dumping fuel on the straight, it ran out, leaned out and broke. That was dumb, but won’t happen again, at least that way.

Tom was back out there on his gilarderbi. Round one was tough with a nasty soft seize followed by a crank big end bearing seizure. With a new crank in, his bike was actually quite reliable, but it was slow. The weather was weird this weekend with high humidity and higher temps than we saw last week. Needless to say, he wasn’t jetted correctly, and wasn’t making enough power to fully variate despite changing the weights a few times. I think he finished 19th the 1st race (he fell) and did better the 2nd, but not top 10. So even though it wasn’t awesome, his bike survived some abuse, evoking more confidence in the setup.

We had an extra derbi flatreed variant that sean ended up riding in Matt’s place. It only did 35-maybe 40, but he actually held up well before everyone dusted him on the straight. He didn’t block anyone too bad, so that was good. He had a lot of fun on the track despite being the slowest. Crashes and others not starting meant he wasn’t last place. I don’t know if thats good or not.

Lets pretend tom held onto this one.

justin blasted everyone on magnumx

So it was a fun weekend again, but tons of mopeds. It looked like a rally pack on the track, and seemed unsafe. The fastest 6 or so lapped just about everyone else, so I think we need to lobby polini to split the heats up next time as there will likely be even more bikes. Sure its fun racing with a bunch of people, but I’d hate to see anyone hurt.

I might (hopefulllly!) be out there next month. My derbi is almost back alive. Its had some upgrades, so it should be quite competitive if I can get out there. Look for those updates soonish after a few stupid midterms.

PS, I should add that I do not represent the riding styles or mistakes my friends made on the track. That said, watch out for them, they all went down, and they all get in the way. We should be the “cuperteens race team that stinks at racing because we are newb tuners and kinda crummy riders”.

upjetting is for losers

I still haven’t tuned my shit (wind, rain and other obligations), but I decided to get a 24 oko for derbi. I got a bigger intake from benji (24.3mm inner diameter), and the oko and all the jets and stuff. Everything fit right up except the throttle cable, so now I need a new one, and am waiting on that. After riding 3 race bikes (mine, creature jimmy’s and tom’s), I feel like I’m doing well. My bike performed similarly to Jimmy’s decked out peugeot, but both pale in comparison to tom’s derbi. I think the bigger carb and actually tuning the carb and ignition should get mine to pull as hard as his. Front wheel lift is unavoidable if you dump the throttle through turns! Oh yea, new TJT belt seems to have removed any/all variator lag, so now it won’t be scary to ride anymore. I should have it running tuesday or so, basically as soon as the new cable comes. Race practice was cancelled today due to rain. We are hoping to get some track time this week.

Some new parts for the flat reed motor came as well, so I’m getting excited. Benji is the parts master. I sent him a wishlist, and the next day, seemingly reading my mind, what I wanted arrived in treatland. I want a derbi rear wheel for herbi because the 5 star hub may cause some issues with sprocket alignment and tabs have to be added to the swingarm. I’ll update if I get anymore parts or make any progress.

Also, I got my magnum back up and running. I needed a moped running last night, so I’m using my brown frame, ups tank and other goodies, 2 speed polini and more. Its pretty quick now, very fun!
